Lottery, rental rules for affordable housing reviewed

New rules that govern the town and county’s affordable housing program are up for elected officials’ final approval.

The most important proposed change has to do with the way the Jackson/Teton County Affordable Housing Department selects homeowners to live in the subsidized units.

The Town Council and the Teton County Board of County Commissioners indicated they wanted a “weighted lottery.” That means all applicants who can fill an affordable home’s bedrooms have a shot at winning it in a random drawing, but people who have worked for longer in the community or who are critical-service providers receive more entries and, therefore, a greater chance of being selected.
