Nicolle Moyer was living in fear of getting a raise.

“I had to decide, do I want to further my career, or do I want to stay in my house?” Moyer said. “If I got a raise, my rent would go up. I was terrified to get a promotion.”

She was living in federal income-restricted housing through the Department of Agriculture, and when a promotion did arrive, the increased rent became too much on top of car payments and groceries. Moyer and her daughter lost their house.
